District 9

I finally got to see Neill Blomkamp's District 9 tonight after a couple of false starts. The anticipation I had for this movie was at it's highest and as the movie opened I was on tender hooks because the film wasn't quite framed right. Of course this was no fault of the film but a small gaffe by The Electric cinema who usually offer a flawless performance so I can forgive them for that.

Tom and Summer

(500) Days Of Summer is the new love story that claims from the outset that it is not a love story. Expecting the usual run of the mill rom-com I was pleasantly surprised at what unfolded as a real life rom-com including all the bad bits of a relationship as well as the good. The story follows the sad sack life of Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a man who wanted to be an architect but finds himself writing greeting cards for a living as he first sets eyes on Summer (Zooey Deschanel), the woman who he believes to be 'the one' and so we begin the 500 days of their relationship.

The Final Destination is the fourth film in the Final Destination series that began way back in 2000. Over the last 10 years the films have built up a fan base of cinema goers looking forward to some cartoon style decapitations and other gruesome ends. The actual story in each one is identical with a group of friends narrowly avoiding a fatal accident after one of them experiences a premonition of the event.

Tonight I attended the 9pm showing of Watchmen. I had finished a long day at work and the auditorium was very warm so at times I almost dropped off. The reason I am telling you this first is that the conditions were not right for me to fully enjoy the movie. Whilst watching I was distracted by the heat and my tiredness. Although the movie does have some genuine self indulgent scenes that drag on for an eternity, as a whole this is a movie like no other. I think after another viewing under better conditions it will border on greatness.

I just finished watching Lost Boys: The Tribe which I have both been looking forward to and at the same time dreading. There is so much sacrilege of late with many franchises being brought back from the dead. Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Rambo, Robocop, Friday the 13th etc etc the list goes on and on. Most have been lacklustre compared to what we remember of them. Well I have both news good and bad. First the bad. Lost Boys 2 is of course not a patch on the original in both story, character and atmosphere (bring in Russ Abbott).

I just watched the War Games sequel that has just gone straight to DVD. Ive mixed feelings about this one. They almost won me over with a cheap shot - bringing back Dr. Stephen Faulken and Joshua - the bastards almost got me raving wow about this movie. In truth it's a far fetched, unbelievable pile of nonesense. For the first 40 minutes I was midly entertained but found myself constantly thinking 'BULLSHIT!' at every lame 'hack' that the main character Will Farmer pulled out the bag.

Last night I watched BTK, a movie about the killer known as BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill). This is a curious story because of a co-incidence that happened to me back in February 2005. I was bored on the net one day back in 2005 when I stumbled upon a forum for Park City which is in Wichita, Kansas. There were people posting information about who they thought a killer known as BTK was. This got my interest up and I did some on the spot research and found that BTK was the name of a serial killer who had started killing in 1974. He carried on killing until 1991 when all of a sudden he stopped.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Review written 29/12/2008.

Today I read the short story The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button written back in 1921. Tonight I watched the movie adaption of the same story which stars Brad Pitt as the central role Benjamin Button. At 2hrs 45 mins this is a long movie by todays standards and many reviews online have stated that it was overlong. Personally I think it could have been a lot longer as the movie skips over many important times in a persons life.

My Bloody Valentine 3D

Review written by Lu on 23rd Jan 2009.

Harry Warden's name lives long in the memories of the townsfolk of a small town in West Virginia after he went on a maniacal killing spree, butchering 22 people on a cold valentine's night. Despite rumours that he was buried alive in the mines that he stalked, the body of the maniac has never been discovered. Fast forward ten years and it seems that the evil has returned, because a gas-masked maniac begins stalking the village and killing everyone that was somehow connected to the original massacre. Has Harry returned?
