I just finished watching Lost Boys: The Tribe which I have both been looking forward to and at the same time dreading. There is so much sacrilege of late with many franchises being brought back from the dead. Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Rambo, Robocop, Friday the 13th etc etc the list goes on and on. Most have been lacklustre compared to what we remember of them. Well I have both news good and bad. First the bad. Lost Boys 2 is of course not a patch on the original in both story, character and atmosphere (bring in Russ Abbott). The vampire characters are just plain assholes whereas in the original they were bad guys that you kinda liked. Theres a lot of unnecessary swearing, seems to be the case every time theres a black guy around. Im not stereotyping, THEY are (as in the movie makers) - Im not pro race or unpro race - Im just fed up with 'motherfucker im gonna kick yo white ass you motherfuckin bitch' every two minutes for no apparent reason. It killed it for me in the first 2 minutes. However after I got over that the movie was generally ok entertainment that filled my hour and a half without me feeling Id lost it at the end. Realy this is a standalone movie that just rides the name Lost Boys, the makers have incorporated a number of characters that can be compared to ones in the original. There is an aunt who tries (and fails) to act in a similar way to the grandpa in the original. The lead character is fairly likeable and there are a few scenes where they have tried to recreate scenes from the first film. In one scene he walks into a surf shop and starts browsing the boards (instead of comics). This time however his sibling is a sister instead of an older brother. She gets taken in by the vampire in crowd and the film is about him trying to become a vampire in order to save her. Acting is ok. Special effects are minimal and look a bit like someone made them at home over the weekend, for instance when vampires burst into flames the flames look overlaid and not part of the scene. Now the good... depending on your viewpoint one of the things I loved about the first was the ridiculous 'man' voice of Corey Feldman as Frog brother Edgar. Is was so wonderfully hammy (on purpose) that it worked. Once again Feldman is back as Edgar Frog and so is the ridiculous voice although now it's even more so - he sounds like a WWE wrestler and I wasn't sure if they had taken it too far, it was kind of funny but now that Feldman is an adult it didnt quite pull off like in the original, he just came across as a bit false like he was trying too hard to be macho. Apart from that he was ok although he didnt actually do too much vampire killing himself. Also during the credits there is an extra scene which if you saw the original you should probably watch, in fact the 'extra' scene was more interesting than the movie that had just taken place and leaves me wondering if a better movie could have been made if they had used the theme of that short scene as the main story. All Im saying is the scene consists of Corey Feldman and Corey Haim (who apart from this doesnt appear in the film). I also hear that there is also a deleted scene that appears on the DVD that includes Jamison Newlander who played Alan Frog in the original. All in all I enjoyed watching it but I probably wouldnt watch it again. It could have been a lot worse but by the same means it could also have been a lot better. By all means download it and Im sure if you like vampire movies it'll keep you entertained but for gods sake under no circumstance buy it. It's not a keeper. It's due out at the beginning of September 2008.
