Away We Go

Sam Mendes (Road To Perdition, American Beauty) brings us this relationship story of a couple expecting their first child. They are in their mid thirties and up until now have coasted along happy with the very little in life they have.

It is when John (Burt Farlander) and Maya (Verona De Tessant) visit John's parents that the journey implied in the title begins. Over a discussion of the expected birth John's parents reveal they are going to be moving from Denver to Belgium for a few years, something that they have apparently been planning for years but now they have the opportunity and they are due to move a month before the baby arrives. John and Maya are shocked as they expected his parents to be around to help bring up their first grandchild. They both decide that the reason they live where they do was in order to be close to his parents but now that they have decided to move away there is no reason for them to stay either. They agree to go on a trip across America visiting old friends in order to try and find a nice place to live and bring up their child. Away they go. What they find over the course of the movie is that not everyone they thought were leading perfect lives actually are and most of the story is more about their friends lives. Will they find their perfect home on the journey? More importantly will they find themselves? You will have to watch to find out. It was refreshing to see a film where the two main characters had no horrible traits and actually loved each other. It was nice to see two people living so good together and not spending the whole movie arguing. An enjoyable little film with what felt like real people.

I thought this was charming and kept me interested throughout. There is no action, no explosions, no cgi and that's why I liked it, a welcome break to the usual cinema fayre. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon. It's full of humorous moments and nice little touches that keep your interest. It's not something I could watch again as once you know the story there isn't enough to bring you back for more but as a one off sitting it worked. Watch it if you like nice stories about nice people.
